Truck Driver Career InformationBecoming a truck driver requires much more than just the ability to drive a vehicle. Truck drivers who drive large trucks (carrying at least 26,000 lbs.) or trucks that transport hazardous materials must obtain their commercial driver's license or CDL. The CDL is obtained by passing a written exam and a driving exam specific to trucking. Typically, drivers must be 18 to drive trucks in state but 21 in order to drive between states. Truck drivers must also pass physical examinations every 2 years to test hearing and vision and random drug tests are given to ensure that the driver will not be a danger to other drivers.
